Exploring one of the central themes in science education theory, this volume examines how science education can be considered as a scientific activity within a broad post-positivist notion of science. Many students find learning science extremely problematic, whatever level of education they have reached. At the end of the 1970s a new approach to tackling learning difficulties in science was developed, drawing on ideas from psychology and cognitive science, and centred on the way students build up new knowledge in reference to their existing ideas. ‘Constructivism’ became the dominant paradigm in science education research for two decades, spawning a vast body of literature reporting aspects of learners’ ideas in different science topics. However, Constructivism came under fire as it was recognised that the research did not offer immediate and simple prescriptions for effective science teaching. The whole approach was widely criticised, in particular by those who saw it as having ‘anti-science’ leanings.

In this book, the notion of scientific research programmes is used to understand the development, limitations and potential of constructivism. It is shown that constructivist work in science education fits into a coherent programme exploring the contingencies of learning science. The author goes further to address criticisms of constructivism; evaluate progress in the field; and suggest directions for future research. Materials  are needed that posess almost every conceivable range of properties: metallic to insulating, hard to soft, inert to  reactive, luminescent to quenched, crystalline to glassy - the list goes on. As a result, an immeasurable number  of elements, compounds, and alloys have been subject to nanostructuring and nanofabrication tools. Add to this  the range of geometrical nanostructures required: disks, rods, holes, pyramids, etc., and a range of tunability in  the degree of interaction between nanoparticles to be isolated or closely coupled. The degree of long range  ordering, either random or periodic, can also be a critical consideration, as well as whether that ordering  extends in one, two, or three dimensions. It is clear that nanofabrication is a daunting task.  The range of nanofabrication routes towards these structures is almost as diverse as the materials, applications,  and geometries needed for next-generation applications. The approaches can begin to be  compartmentalized by separation into either a ‘‘top-down’’ or ‘‘bottom-up’’ approach.

This book is a good choice to learn mask design if you want to keep it as simple and cook-book like as possible. The book focuses on basic CMOS digital. Approximately 80 percent of all mask design is in CMOS digital, so that makes sense. Ancillary topics are brought up, such as simplified electronic conceptualizations of transistors, resistors, capacitance, current density, it even touches on more specialized areas such as floor planning and routing. This book covers a lot of ground lightly, but never with any engineering depth. I ignored those areas where, in my opinion, the author crossed the line of over-simplification for the sake of simplicity (the indication of current flow in P transistors is well meaning but incorrect, for example), in my earliest review of this book. But now that several years have passed and I have seen first-hand how this has at times confused mask design students, I feel that it should be mentioned.

Engineers and experienced mask designers should consider one of the more in-depth books, such as The Art of Analog Layout, or IC Layout Basics: A Practical Guide, or IC Mask Design: Essential Layout Techniques, or one of the many VLSI Design 101 texts for electronic engineering students.

Purchase "The Art of Analog Layout" if you want to focus on analog mask design issues, or any of the above-mentioned books for the more specialized or difficult material such as analog layout, the bipolar transistor, power, VFET, MESFET, heterojunction, GaAs, SiGe, discrete, infra-red low bandgap materials, light collection, minority carriers, high voltage layout techniques, or anything more difficult, advanced, unusual, or for engineers versus mask designers. "The Art of Analog Layout" is so good as to be an excellent reference for even the working mask designer and engineer.

Everyone is different. Perhaps if you wish to learn mask design as if it were more like drafting, as some vocational schools still do, then this book is for you. I'm a senior analog chip design engineer and an advanced-level mask designer. I've worked with beginning mask designers. My opinion is that the mask-design-like-drafting path does not an excellent mask designer make, and one of the above-mentioned books would be better to learn by, even if less simple.

There are many books discussing electronic circuit design which include a chapter or two dedicated to wideband and high-speed circuits and instrumentation. In most of those books the way of achieving a high bandwidth relies almost exclusively on the selection of semiconductor devices fast enough to do the job. Only a few of them go deep enough into specific details useful for starting the high-speed circuit design from scratch; fewer still dedicate enough space to identify the causes for bandwidth limitation, let alone the remedies and solutions possible with careful and systematic consideration of active and passive component interactions and specific circuit topology selections.

There are also many books discussing circuit analysis, modeling and performance optimization strategies; almost none, however, offers also the complete introduction to mathematical procedures required for a successful design, particularly if time-domain or transient performance is of prime importance.

Wideband Amplifiers attempts to cover both of these requirements, starting from the basics of mathematical procedures and circuit analysis but also offering the more advanced topics of system optimization and synthesis, along with the complete mathematical apparatus required. We have tried to show the circuit examples in such a way that the main principles for achieving high bandwidth are clearly exposed, independently of the actual device technology used in the circuit realization. At the same time we were striving not to loose sight of the everyday needs of a circuit design engineer, so we have intentionally limited the contents of mathematics to the necessary minimum. While some of the derivations require a degree of previous mathematical knowledge, we have taken care to include the trivial steps in order to help a less experienced reader to follow the subject easily. This book 'Electrostatics' on the physics of electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetic fields and waves. The major aspects of the electrical field including atomic structure and basic electricity, direct and alternating current, basic circuit theory, three-phase circuits, single phase, transformers, generators, and motors.

All studerlts of physics need to understand the basic concepts of electricity and magnetism. E&M is central to the study of physics, and central tc understanding the developments of the last two hundred years of not just science, but technology. But the core of electricity and magnetism can be difficult to understand - many of the ideas are counterintui.tive and difficult to appreciate. This as a basis, it is possible to develop all of electromagnetic theory from a single experimental postulate founded on Coulomb's law. An enriched understanding of magnetism results, and the Biot-Savart law is a consequence rather than a postulate.

The Lorentz force law is seen to be a transformation of Coulomb's law occasioned by the relativistic interpretation of force. Upon accepting the Lorentz force law as fundamental, one is able to derive Faraday's emf law and Maxwell's equations as additional consequences. This procedure provides the further satisfaction of demonstrating that the fields contained in the Lorentz force law and in Maxwell's equations are one and the same, a conclusion not possible in the conventional development of the subject.

Skillfully organized introductory text examines origin of differential equations, then defines basic terms and outlines general solution of a differential equation. Subsequent sections deal with integrating factors; dilution and accretion problems; linearization of first order systems; Laplace Transforms; Newton’s Interpolation Formulas, more.

This is a condensed book, one that will provide a very sleep slope to any reader who lacks an intimate familiarity with calculus and related notation. There are exercises with solutions, but the solutions carry no explanations. For most students, this book will be frustrating at least as often as it provides flashes of insight. I would have enjoyed a more leisurely approach to the subject matter.

Still, this is an inexpensive and thorough text on an intrinsically difficult subject. To my knowledge, the perfect textbook on ODEs has not yet been written (though I did enjoy Mark Krusemeyer's no-longer-quite-in-print Differential Equations, which I had the pleasure of using for a class taught by the author); until then, this will have to do.
