The unit simultaneously identifies the kind of dimension and the magnitude of the reference quantity used as a basis for  comparison. The number indicates how many of the reference units are contained in the quantity being measured. If we say that the mass of a sample is 20 grams, we mean that the mass is 20 times the mass of 1 gram, the unit of mass chosen for comparison. Although 20 grams has the dimension of mass, 20 is a pure dimensionless number, being the ratio of two masses, that of the sample and that of the reference, 1 gram.

In addition, more radical approaches appear on the horizon, such as replacement of lost neurons with grafted tissue.

Over the course of roughly a year, after completing my first book, I resurrected an old pet project of building an autonomous submarine (referred to as the E-2 project) with certain fairly challenging functionality requirements. In the course of developing this idea, I spent many hours on the Internet and elsewhere, researching techniques for rapid development of various electromechanical control systems and platforms to run fairly complex signal-processing algorithms. Although there are, of course, thousands of useful projects and snippets of information to be obtained from the Internet and books on hobbyist robotics, I found that nobody else seemed to have my exact priorities. In particular, there is apparently no single reference that gathers together at least introductory solutions to all the embedded design issues that affected my project: a need to use low-cost (open-source) tools and operating systems, a requirement for several features with fairly hard real-time requirements, and a desire to use cheap, off-the-shelf consumer grade components wherever possible.

The Model Predictive Control (MPC) Toolbox is a collection of functions (commands) developed for the analysis and design of model predictive control (MPC) systems. Model predictive control was conceived in the 1970s primarily by industry. Its popularity steadily increased throughout the 1980s. At present, there is little doubt that it is the most widely used multivariable control algorithm in the chemical process industries and in other areas. Some of the popular names associated with model predictive control are DynamicMatrix Control (DMC), IDCOM, model algorithmic control, etc.While these algorithms differ in certain details, the main ideas behind them are very similar. Indeed, in its basic unconstrained formMPC is closely related to linear quadratic optimal control. In the constrained case, however, MPC leads to an optimization problem which is solved on-line in real time at each sampling interval. MPC takes full advantage of the power available in today’s control computer hardware. This software and the accompanying manual are not intended to teach the user the basic ideas behind MPC. Background material is available in standard textbooks like those authored by Seborg, Edgar and Mellichamp (1989)1, Deshpande and Ash (1988)2 and the monograph devoted solely to this topic authored byMorari and coworkers (Morari et al., 1994)3. This section provides a basic introduction to the main ideas behind MPC and the specific form of implementation chosen for this toolbox. The algorithms used here are consistent with those described in the monograph by Morari et al. Indeed, the software is meant to accompany the monograph and vice versa.

A computer program to emulate reasoning must proceed similarly. Unfortunately, in much mathematical description of the thought process the dynamic nature is lost. We cannot afford to make this error. Expert systems are computer programs, designed to make available some of the skills of an expert to nonexperts. Since such programs attempt to emulate in some way an expert’s thinking patterns, it is natural that the first work here was done in Artificial Intelligence (AI) circles. Among the first expert systems were the 1965 Dendral programs (Feigenbaum and Buchanan, 1993), which determined molecular structure from mass spectrometer data; R1 (McDermott, 1980) used to configure computer systems; and MYCIN (Shortliffe, 1976) for medical diagnosis. Since the middle 1960s there have been many expert systems created for fields ranging from space shuttle operations through intensive-care-unit patient alarm systems to financial decision making.

Designing software for control systems is difficult. Experienced controls engineers  have learned many techniques that allow them to solve problems. This book was written to present methods for designing controls software using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). It is my personal hope that by employing the knowledge in the book that you will be able to quickly write controls programs that work as expected (and avoid having to learn by costly mistakes.) This book has been designed for students with some knowledge of technology, including limited electricity, who wish to learn the discipline of practical control system design on commonly used hardware. To this end the book will use the Allen Bradley ControlLogix processors to allow depth. Although the chapters will focus on specific hardware, the techniques are portable to other PLCs. Whenever possible the IEC 61131 programming standards will be used to help in the use of other PLCs. In some cases the material will build upon the content found in a linear controls course. But, a heavy emphasis is placed on discrete control systems. Figure 1.1 crudely shows some of the basic categories of control system problems. Logical and sequential control is preferred for system design. These systems are more stable, and often lower cost. Most continuous systems can be controlled logically. But, some times we will encounter a system that must be controlled continuously. When this occurs the control system design becomes more demanding. When improperly controlled, continuous systems may be unstable and become dangerous. When a system is well behaved we say it is self regulating. These systems don’t need to be closely monitored, and we use open loop control. An open loop controller will set a desired position for a system, but no sensors are used to verify the position. When a loop. A cruise control in a car is an excellent example. This will monitor the actual speed of a car, and adjust the speed to meet a set target speed.
